SPIN-Gela 2025

The SPIN-Gela 2025 oceanographic cruise was conducted on board R/V Gaia Blu owned by CNR (National Research Council of Italy) between 14 and 28 April 2025 for multibeam bathymetry and sub-bottom profiling acquisition and focused on a stretch of the southern Sicilian continental margin where marine geo-hazards (submarine landslides, some inferred marine faults and minor pockmarks) interfere with the offshore hydrocarbon extraction and storage activities occurring in the Strait of Sicily. The cruise covered an area of 1438.92 km2 of new multibeam data (Kongsberg EM712 1°x0.5°, Seapath 380 was used for positing and MRU corrections. DGPS correction was sent over the EMSAT and IOSAT L band beams with a FUGRO Marinestar annual subscription. Sound velocity profiles were acquired in 7 stations with a Valeport MIDAS SVP. SIS 5 was used to collect multibeam data which were processed with the QPS software Qimera) and 120 sub-bottom profiler CHIRP profiles using the system by Knudsen 3260, 3.5 kHz. These activities were carried out within the project SPIN (test of good practices for the Study of the Potential INteration between offshore activities and natural hazards) sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Safety (MASE), Department of Energy, General Directorate of Energy Sources and Qualification Titles and they fall within the study objectives of the Italian Commission for Major Risks and the Department of Civil Protection, under the frame of the Offshore Directive 2013/30/EU on the safety of offshore operations. The SPIN-Gela 2025 cruise was planned to complete the acquisition of the SPIN-Gela 2024 that incurred into unfavorable weather conditions, almost a year prior. The multibeam data will provided to the EMODnet bathymetry data infratsructure as 1/16 x 1/16 arc minutes DTM available for download.
